Why we collect your personal information
The University of Melbourne is collecting and processing your personal information to:<ul><li>administer your account registration;</li><li>communicate with you about areas of study, courses, programs or events in which you have expressed interest, enrolled or registered to attend;</li><li>manage your enquiry, enrolment or attendance in course, program or event;</li><li>improve our products and services, including your user experience;</li><li>inform general business analysis, quality assurance, reporting and planning activities;</li><li>utilise your data to provide relevant digital content and communications;</li><li>use your data to enhance your experience when utilising the university’s digital assets; </li></ul>The “processing&quot; of personal information refers to all activities relating to the management of your personal information, from its collection and use, through to its storage and disposal, and everything in between.
How we collect and process your personal information
We will process your personal information as necessary for our legitimate interests in accordance with applicable privacy laws, and only under the following circumstances:<ul><li>for the purpose for which it was collected;</li><li>for a related purpose which you might reasonably expect;</li><li>where you have consented; or</li><li>if we are required or permitted to do so by law.</li></ul>
We will collect your personal information directly from you wherever possible. 
We may share your personal information with: <ul><li>the University’s Advancement Office to manage and maintain alumni networks (applies to graduates only);</li><li>contracted service providers engaged by us to conduct market research or other marketing-related services, including IT and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) services;</li><li>contracted service providers engaged by us to run events or facilitate event services;</li><li>social media and other platforms to communicate or promote our services directly to you and other users via these channels;</li></ul>
Your de-identified information may also be disclosed to social media and other digital platforms to create audiences for targeted advertising via these channels.In some instances, your personal information may be transferred outside of Victoria or Australia (for example, where providers are located internationally or use a cloud-based system with servers based in international jurisdictions). We take all reasonable steps to ensure that the interstate or overseas transfer of personal information is in accordance with our privacy obligations as outlined in the University’s <a href="https://about.unimelb.edu.au/strategy/governance/compliance-obligations/privacy/privacy-statements/general-privacy-statement" target="_blank">General Privacy Statement</a>.
If you choose not to provide the contact information requested, we may not be able to create your account, register your attendance for or provide you with information about the course, program or event for which you expressed interest.

However, this will not affect the lawfulness of our processing of your information prior to you withdrawing your consent.
